Neeraj Chopra a simple boy from Haryana made India proud with his dedication and skills in athletics. He is the first athlete to win a gold medal in Olympics under the field and track category. As of August 2021, he is ranked 2nd in World’s Athletics Organization. Apart from being an athlete, he is currently working as Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Indian Army.

The young prodigy

Before making it big he had had already made a name for himself in the IAAF World U20 Championship where he was the first Indian Track and Field athlete to win and was the youngest and made a world record throw of 86.48 m. Following this in the year 2018, in Commonwealth Games and Asian Games he won the gold medal.

When he was a kid, Neeraj Chopra was teased for his obesity. His father made him enroll in the gymnasium club and subsequently to Javelin throw in Shivija’s Stadium Panipat. When his skills of throwing were discovered, Choudhary became his first coach. Soon he won a bronze medal in district competition.


His international career and wins secured him a job in the Indian Army. After his wins in the commonwealth, he was recommended for Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna but was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2018.

Post Olympics

When the Indian Contingent team landed post the Olympics in India, everyone received them with pride. Neerja Chopra’s gold made him the most sought player for brand endorsement. He is ranked 2nd after Virat Kholi. Over 20 different companies are supporting these athletes. Before endorsement brands used to charge 20-30 lakhs, now the brands are negotiating for 2-3 crores. The endorsements rates are peaking to inspire the younger generation to participate and play sports.

Within a day of his Olympics feat, Mahindra Group Chairman, Anand Mahindra promised to gift an SUV to the javelin thrower, IndiGo offered him free air travel for a year, and Edtech major Byju’s declared a cash reward of Rs 2 crore. Before his win, he was the brand ambassador for British Electronics Amstrad, but now he is offered a stream of endorsement offers.

Endorsement Hike

Abhinav Bindra the other winner of the Gold medal in the Olympics charges 1 crore for endorsements since his 2008 win. According to reports, Neeraj Chopra’s rate is going to increase 4 times more than the current charge. This steep rise is due to being the best in the world in Javelin

The color of the medal is secondary when it comes to the sports sector. Cricket is placed in the highest rank for endorsements, followed by tennis and badminton which has a stark difference in the charges.

Among the brands seeking Chopra in the recent past are Country Delight Naturals, Gillette India, Mobil India, and IQOO. He has one of the highest engagement rates with his social media followers with over 15%, and his fan base has now increased 15 times to more than 2.6 million followers on Instagram.

Neeraj Chopra at a young age is a responsible officer and has earned respect, inspiration, and admiration from the globe. His new records have set him on a pedestal high.
